How is the NBE scored?
Your scores are based on the number of questions that you get correct.

You must achieve a minimum scaled score of 75 on both the Arts section and the Science section of the NBE in order to pass the examination. This requirement is necessary in order to adhere to current examination standards for professional licensure and certification.

What are scaled scores?
Scaled scoring takes into account the difficulty of each question. The questions on the National Board Exam are selected from our item bank in accordance with psychometric guidelines. Using scaled scores in testing ensures that no candidate receives an unfair advantage by taking a easier form of the test or is unfairly evaluated by taking a more difficult form of the test. Scaled scores allow our testing and psychometric professionals to create exams where the overall score represents the same level of knowledge from one exam form to the next. Scaled scores take into account the varying degree of difficulty of a group of items from test to test.

Can I calculate the percentage of questions that I got correct?
Sure. Let's say that in Funeral Service Merchandising you got 17 out of the 25 questions correct. By dividing 17 by 25, you find that you got 68% of the questions correct in the Funeral Service Merchandising subsection. However, your scaled score for Funeral Service Merchandising may be 78 (rather than 68) because it takes into account the difficulty of the particular questions you answered correctly. Your scaled score will always be higher than your percentage score.

Why report the number of items that we got correct?
Because students have asked for this information. Plus, in case you did not pass the NBE, it gives you an indication of where you might need to focus your review studies before taking the NBE again.

Can I review my test to see what questions I missed?

No, it is not possible to review your test once it has been scored. For study purposes, you should focus on the areas of the exam where your scores were the weakest.

What if I need to reschedule my exam appointment(s)?
